Goss Printing Press Parts, Goss Press Relocation, and Thermal Printer Stickers: What a Printing Buyer Actually Needs to Know

Ask three print shop owners what to prioritize and you'll get three different answers. One will say keep the old Goss press running. Another will say moving it was the best decision. A third will tell you the real problem is the label printer in the office. They're all right. There is no single answer because there is no single situation. Press parts, press relocation, blank pages, and thermal stickers are four different problems, and they need four different thought processes.

I'm an office administrator for a 180-person printing and distribution company. I manage equipment purchasing, facility moves, and office supplies—roughly $600,000 annually across 25 vendors. I report to both operations and finance, which means I look at every purchase from two sides: will it work, and will it pass an audit?

After five years of managing these relationships, I've landed on a framework. Break the problem into scenarios. When you know which scenario you're in, the decision gets easier.

Scenario 1: You need Goss printing press parts, and the press is down

The first question is not 'Where do I buy the part?' It's 'Is this a wear part or a timing part?' For a Goss press, those are different buying decisions.

I didn't fully understand this until a folding cylinder gear failed on our Goss Urbanite in March 2023. We ordered a 'compatible' replacement from an aftermarket supplier. It looked identical. It didn't fit the timing. The press was down an extra two days while we tracked down the correct part. We saved $1,800 on the gear, then spent about $6,700 on overtime and rush shipping.

So now I follow a simple rule:

If the part controls timing, buy the documented part. If it's a wear item, you have options.
  • For blankets, rollers, and wear items, aftermarket can work—but verify the durometer or hardness spec against the original part.
  • For gears, cams, bearers, and anything tied to registration, buy a genuine Goss part or a part with a full engineering drawing and tolerance report.

Before you call anyone, pull the original Goss service manual. The part number in that manual is your passport to a correct replacement. You also need the press model, serial number, and cutoff. For a Goss Community with a 22.75-inch cutoff, that information means more than a photo of the old part.

One more thing: if you run older Goss presses, parts availability is not automatic. As of January 2025, some castings and specialty gears have long lead times. Keep a small inventory of the parts that fail most often on your model (usually blankets, rollers, and folding pins). That's not a sales pitch. It's basic risk management.

Scenario 2: You're planning a Goss press relocation, not a repair

Relocating a Goss press is a different beast. The press may be physically sound, but the building isn't, or the operation is moving, or you need to reconfigure the line. In 2020, most print shops assumed they would never move a web offset press. By 2025, relocation and reconfiguration have become a smarter alternative to buying new equipment.

Look, a press relocation is 20% moving heavy iron and 80% reassembly precision. The millwright team has to re-establish line shaft timing, set the side frames square, and verify the folder ribbon deck alignment. Skip any of those steps and you'll chase registration problems for months.

If you're facing a Goss press relocation, do this:

  1. Get a detailed site survey from a press service engineer before any rigging bid.
  2. Tag every part, hose, and wire during disassembly. Sounds obvious. You'd be surprised.
  3. Budget for new anchor bolts, dryer ducting, and electrical drops (they're never reusable).
  4. Plan for a test with paper—not just an idle run—before you accept the installation.

I made the mistake of skipping the first step in 2023. We had two hours to decide on a rigging contractor before the building lease deadline. Normally I would get three quotes and check references. There was no time. I went with a crane company that had good online reviews. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. They moved the press in two days, but reinstallation took ten days, and we had to pay an outside press engineer to fix the timing.

Does relocation make sense in your case? If you still print 30,000-copy newspaper runs and your page count fits a web press, a reconditioned Goss press can be a good investment. If your work has shifted to short-run digital, moving the old iron might only be sentimental. The fundamentals—gears, ink, paper—haven't changed. The business case has.

Scenario 3: The office printer printing blank pages

This one sounds minor until finance gets involved. A printer printing blank pages stops a whole department. The vendor who couldn't provide proper invoicing cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses, but a blank-page printer cost us two employee hours and a rushed FedEx order.

When a laser or inkjet printer prints blank pages, work through these causes first:

  • Empty or incorrectly seated toner or ink cartridge.
  • A clogged printhead (inkjet) or a failed imaging unit (laser).
  • The wrong driver setting—for example, the application sends a PostScript file while the driver is set for PCL.
  • Paper properties set to the wrong media type.

Don't replace the whole machine yet. Print a diagnostic page or a nozzle check. That single page will tell you whether the printhead, toner, and paper path are actually working.

Scenario 4: You're buying thermal printer stickers and the labels come out blank

Thermal printers are a special case. How does a thermal printer work? Simple. It uses heat instead of ink. There are two technologies, and their supplies are not interchangeable.

Direct thermal printers

A direct thermal printer heats the printhead against paper with a heat-sensitive coating. The coating darkens where heat is applied. This is how most shipping labels and receipt rolls work. There is no ribbon and no ink. If you put plain paper into a direct thermal printer, you get blank labels.

Thermal transfer printers

A thermal transfer printer uses a ribbon with wax or resin. The printhead heats the ribbon, and the material transfers onto the label. This produces a more durable print that resists water, heat, and chemicals. But if the ribbon is loaded backwards, exhausted, or narrower than the label, you end up with faded or blank labels.

When buying thermal printer stickers, don't just order by size. Ask these four questions:

  • Is your printer direct thermal or thermal transfer?
  • What ribbon width and type does the printer need, if any?
  • What environment will the sticker survive—room temperature, freezer, chemical exposure?
  • Is the label stock matte or glossy? Matte usually works better with thermal transfer.

If a thermal printer is producing blank labels, check the media side first. Direct thermal paper has a coated side that must face the printhead. With thermal transfer, make sure the ribbon ink side faces down. It sounds basic, but I've watched a warehouse manager flip a roll three times before realizing the ribbon was loaded backwards.

How to know which scenario you're in

This article has four separate answers on purpose. The mistake is treating a press parts order like a label purchase, or a relocation like a repair.

  • Is the press running but showing wear? That's a parts scenario. Pull the part number and buy by criticality.
  • Is the press sitting still because the building is closing? That's a relocation scenario. Get a press engineer's survey before the movers.
  • Is the output blank, and the machine uses toner, ink, or heat? That's a diagnostic scenario. Run the diagnostic page first.
  • Are you ordering labels for a thermal printer sticker job? That's a supplies scenario. Confirm direct thermal vs thermal transfer before you place the order.

If you're in two scenarios at once, do the one that keeps the business running first. That usually means the press. An old Goss press is worth a lot as a production machine, but not if its parts sit in a crate across town while the office label printer keeps failing.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals—knowing your machine, asking the right questions, verifying supplies—haven't changed. The execution has. Parts catalogs are online, relocation crews use laser alignment tools, and thermal label options multiply every year. The buyer's job is still the same: classify the situation, talk to someone who knows the actual equipment, and make a decision with both eyes open.
