The only question is whether someone tells you the full story before you commit.
What About Retiring an Older Press?
Before anyone calls this a keep-it-forever argument, hear the other side. I have recommended that presses be retired.
At some point, a machine reaches the end of its economic life. Parts costs rise, repair frequency climbs, and a reconfiguration project may cost more than the press will ever earn back. A good maintenance record helps you make that call, too. It shows when a folder was overhauled a third time, when components became hard to source, and when waste started trending upward. That data is not an argument for keeping a press. It is evidence for a decision.
No honest manufacturer promises zero downtime. Anyone who does is selling an idea, not machinery. The transparent offer is more useful even when it is less comfortable: here is the maintenance schedule, here are the likely failure points, and here is what they will cost.
Ask What's Not Included
If you take one habit from this, ask the negative question before the price question. Ask what is not included.
That applies to a press purchase, a maintenance plan, a parts contract, and a service visit. The vendor who lists fees upfront, even when the total looks higher, usually turns out to be cheaper in the end. The vendor who treats maintenance costs as a surprise is creating a quality problem before the first print run.
In printing, quality is not installed on day one. Quality is maintained over the life of the machine. So whether you are evaluating a press with a long Goss history or a new UV printer, ask for the maintenance records. Ask what is not included. Then compare.
History gives you a story. Maintenance gives you proof. The proof is what I want to see before I sign.
