I've been handling press maintenance and production orders for nine years. In that time, I've personally made — and documented — fourteen significant mistakes that cost us roughly $47,000 in wasted budget. I'm not proud of that number. But those mistakes turned into the checklist our team still uses to avoid repeating them.

A wireless all-in-one inkjet printer generally beats a laser for photos. A laser generally beats an inkjet for text-heavy pages.
But neither one comes close to a Goss printing press for consistent, large-volume quality. The industry standard for commercial print is 300 DPI at final size; newsprint typically runs at 170-200 DPI. A well-maintained Goss press holds registration and ink density across tens of thousands of impressions. When a client asks for a brand color match, our internal bar is Delta E under 2 — and the Goss press clears that bar run after run. Per FTC advertising guidelines, if we claim that, we need evidence to back it up. We have it.
In 2017, I didn't understand any of this. We bid a 2,000-copy, 12-page tabloid job and I figured the new wireless all-in-one inkjet printer could handle it. The proof looked fine on my screen. The actual run came back washed out, with ink that sat on top of the paper instead of absorbing. I expected the old Goss press to be the maintenance nightmare. It was built in 1998, it's been reconfigured twice, and it's still running. Meanwhile, the digital printers in our shop are the ones that cause headaches.
Goss press maintenance is mechanical and predictable. Rollers wear, bearings fail, everything follows a schedule you can plan around. Replace parts at the right intervals, keep the lubrication routine, and the press runs. Our press holds better registration today than some brand-new digital machines we've tested.
Digital printers fail at random. One week it's a printhead clog. The next it's a firmware update that breaks networking. The wireless all-in-one inkjet printer we bought for proofing has caused more unplanned downtime in the last 18 months than the Goss press. That's not hyperbole — I checked the service logs.
I don't have hard data on industry-wide digital printer failure rates, but based on nine years in this shop, my sense is that unplanned digital downtime costs us about three to four production days per year. A three-day production delay and a very unhappy client.
Here's what I know now. Laser printer paper is designed for heat and toner. It's smooth — typically 20 lb bond (75 gsm) to 24 lb bond (90 gsm) — and built to survive the fuser. Run it through an inkjet printer and the ink sits on the surface, which causes smudging that makes the print look terrible.
Inkjet paper has a coating designed to absorb liquid ink quickly. That same coating causes problems in a laser printer, because the fuser heat can melt or curl it.
Newsprint is a different thing entirely. It's engineered to absorb ink fast on a high-speed web press and still look readable after sitting in a mailbox. And if you're mailing publications, USPS flat size limits — 6.125" × 11.5" minimum up to 12" × 15", with a maximum thickness of 0.75" — define the physical constraints you're working with. A Goss printing press is built around those properties. Digital printers aren't.
The process gap: we didn't have a formal paper verification step for rush orders. That's what cost us in September 2022. The third time we ordered the wrong paper, I finally built a pre-order checklist. Should have done it after the first time.
Comparison conclusion: Paper is part of the printing system. Laser paper, inkjet paper, and newsprint are three different products. Mixing them up is the most expensive "simple" mistake in this industry. Label your inventory, verify every order, and don't let anyone skip the check.
Dimension 4: Cost Per Job — The Math Nobody Wants to Do
People compare equipment prices and think they know which option is cheaper. The real cost shows up per job.
After nine years and roughly 400 orders, my rule of thumb is:
- Under 1,000 copies: digital wins. Offset setup costs make it uneconomical at this volume.
- 1,000 to 10,000: it depends. Simple, text-heavy work? Laser. Color-critical work? A Goss press with efficient setup beats digital on per-unit cost.
- 10,000 and up: offset wins, and it's not close. Per-unit cost on a Goss press run drops once you amortize setup and paper waste.
Efficiency is competitiveness. Switching short-run work to digital cut our turnaround from five days to two. But running newspaper contracts on digital would have doubled our costs. The Goss press, especially after we reconfigured it in 2023, is the most efficient it's ever been. The two technologies serve different parts of the business.
Comparison conclusion: A shop that mainly does short runs should buy digital and not look back. A newspaper publisher needs a Goss press. A commercial printer doing both — like us — needs to be honest about which jobs belong on which machine.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting in My Office
To be fair, my experience is specific. I've worked with regional newspaper and tabloid work, with some commercial jobs mixed in. If you're running a shop that mostly does business cards and wedding invitations, your math might be different. I've only worked with the equipment we have — I can't speak to every press or printer on the market.
But here's what I've landed on after nine years:
- Don't buy digital to replace a Goss press. Digital complements offset. It does not replace it for newspaper work.
- Build the maintenance checklist before you need it. Ours has caught 47 potential errors in the last 18 months. That's roughly $20,000 in avoided rework.
- Take paper seriously. The wrong paper will cost you more than any machine payment.
- Calculate cost per job, not cost per machine. The wireless all-in-one inkjet printer in our proofing room cost $800. The Goss press cost a lot more. But the press produces a lower per-unit cost on long runs, and that's what keeps the lights on.
Bottom line: if you're on the fence, stop asking which technology is better and start asking which technology fits which jobs.
