I work for a company that handles emergency production issues for printing and publishing clients. Fifteen years in, most of my day is spent on the kind of problems nobody wants to call about at 6 AM. A Goss press went down before a morning edition. A relocation timeline just lost a week because someone forgot a power requirement. An office printer refused to connect while a client waited for proofs.

Goss Press Relocation: What Does It Actually Take?

Goss press relocation isn't a two-person job with a truck and a dolly. These machines weigh multiple tons, and the precision components are worth more than most people's houses. You need a real plan.

In March 2024, we handled a relocation for a Community model. From shutdown to first print, we were down 11 days. The standard estimate for that machine is 2–3 weeks. We beat it because the client started planning three months out, not three weeks.

What you actually need on the ground:

  • A crane rated for 10+ tons (verify the load chart, not just the sticker)
  • Riggers who have specifically worked on Goss machines — general industrial riggers will get you 80% of the way there and that last 20% is where damage happens
  • Photo and video documentation of every cable, hose, and connection before anything gets disconnected
  • A contingency plan for at least one major component arriving damaged

The biggest risk isn't the move itself. It's the scheduling. If you relocate during your client's production cycle, you're gambling with their deadlines and your reputation. Talk to the client first. Lock the date second.

Goss Press Maintenance: What Actually Matters?

Preventive maintenance is boring and cheap. Reactive maintenance is exciting and expensive. I know which one I'd rather budget for.

Most shops we work with follow a baseline Goss press maintenance schedule:

  • Ink roller replacement every 500 hours (or per Goss specs for your model)
  • Blanket inspection monthly
  • Bearing checks quarterly
  • Full registration calibration annually

But here's the thing nobody wants to admit: most shops skip steps because they can't afford the downtime. Then they can't afford the breakdown.

Worst case I saw: a shop went six months without a registration calibration. The press drifted 0.5mm. By the time anyone noticed, 40,000 newspapers were printed unusable. That's roughly $90,000 in lost materials, labor, and credits. The calibration would have taken three hours.

Three hours. Ninety thousand dollars. The math isn't complicated.

Is a Tee Shirt Printer Right for My Print Business?

Depends on what you're already doing. If you run a newspaper or commercial print operation, a tee shirt printer is a different animal.

Tee shirt printers — whether DTG (direct-to-garment) or DTF (direct-to-film) — require different substrate handling, different ink chemistry, and different curing processes. These aren't bolt-on additions to a commercial print workflow.

That said, I've seen shops add tee shirt printing successfully. The ones that fail treat it as "we'll just add a machine." The ones that succeed treat it as a separate business unit with its own workflow, staff, and sales process.

I don't have hard industry data on success rates here. What I can say from our client base is that the shops that succeeded all started with a single dedicated operator who learned the machine inside out before scaling. The ones that spread it across existing staff ran into quality and consistency problems.

Are OKI Printers Good for Commercial Print Work?

For short-run and proofing work, OKI printers can be solid. With a big caveat.

OKI's LED print technology is genuinely good for color accuracy, and their C-series machines are workhorses for small batches. I've seen them handle 100–500 piece runs without issues.

But for production-scale work? Not really. The duty cycles on these machines are rated in the tens of thousands of pages per month. Push past that consistently and you're looking at premature wear, increased service calls, and consumable costs that stop making sense compared to offset.

The move is to use an OKI printer as a proofing device or a backup for small runs. Not as your primary production machine. If it dies during a rush job, you want another option already in place.

How to Connect an HP Printer to WiFi (When Everything Else Is on Fire)

I used to think this question didn't belong in a professional print FAQ. Then I spent 45 minutes during a client emergency trying to get a test printer online while proofs sat waiting. Now I keep the steps written down.

  1. Confirm the printer model supports WiFi. Not all do. Check the box or the model number before you waste time.
  2. Power on the printer. Press and hold the wireless button until the indicator light blinks.
  3. On your computer or phone, go to WiFi settings and look for a network named something like "HP-Setup-XX."
  4. Connect to that network. Open a browser and navigate to 192.168.0.1 or whatever address the printer displays.
  5. Select your office WiFi network, enter the password, and save.
  6. Wait for the printer to reboot and connect.

If that doesn't work — and it often doesn't — reset the printer to factory defaults and try again. HP's firmware sometimes gets stuck in a bad state during setup.

If you're setting up multiple printers, use the HP Smart app. Manual setup works once. Doing it repeatedly gets old fast.

The Rush Fee Question: What Are You Actually Paying For?

I've handled enough emergencies to know this: people resist paying for certainty until they've experienced a missed deadline.

Paying $5,000 extra for a guaranteed weekend Goss press relocation? That's cheap compared to a client who loses $50,000 per week in production downtime.

A maintenance contract with a 24-hour response window? That's worth the premium when a press goes down at 2 AM and the morning edition still has to print by 6.

Rush fees buy certainty. Not just speed. The difference matters.

We learned that in 2023 when we tried to save $8,000 by using a lower-cost rigger for a relocation. They dropped a cylinder. Two weeks to repair. Our client lost an annual contract worth $200,000.

We only use Goss-certified riggers now. No exceptions. The "savings" cost us 25 times what we thought we were saving.

Cheap and uncertain is almost always more expensive than paying for predictable.
