Goss Printing Press Maintenance & Relocation: 14 Steps I Use When the Deadline Can't Move

I coordinate emergency repair and relocation for commercial printing plants. In 15 years, I've triaged 200+ rush jobs—many on Goss equipment: Community models, Urbanite, and the older Suburban presses still running in smaller newspapers. When a publisher calls at 9 PM because the press is down and the first edition goes to bed at midnight, you learn what actually matters. This checklist is what I walk through on those calls. It's written for plant managers, pressroom supervisors, and maintenance leads who need to keep a Goss press running—or move one to a new building—without losing days of production.

There are 14 steps total: seven for preventive maintenance, seven for relocation. Most operators know the basics. The ones I'd call out are the steps I repeatedly see skipped, even by crews with decades in the industry.

Part 1: Goss Printing Press Maintenance

1. Verify the Obvious Before Opening Anything

When a press stops, the default reaction is to check ink and blankets. I've watched crews pull an entire inking unit apart only to discover a tripped safety switch. Before disassembling anything, verify power, air pressure, and the safety interlock circuit. Air pressure below 85 PSI creates phantom faults on many Goss Community models—the trip mechanisms engage, but the control panel doesn't show it clearly. That check takes 10 minutes and can save a three-hour teardown.

2. Check the Folder First, Not Last

Roughly 60% of the emergency calls we get involve the folder, not the printing units. The former, the nip rollers, the quarter folder—when any of these is out of adjustment, you get creased product and the press speed gets dialed down to compensate. Check the folder before you chase color. A misfolding press wastes more paper in an hour than an ink problem wastes in a shift.

3. Set Blankets to Spec, Not to Feel

Every Goss press has a documented blanket packing height. On Urbanite models, it's typically around .005 inches of packing with conventional blankets (or a bit less—about .004—with compressible blankets, depending on the brand). Set it with a micrometer. When blankets run under-packed, operators compensate with more impression pressure, which accelerates gear wear. Replacing worn gears on an older Goss unit isn't cheap; I've quoted $30,000+ for gear sets on some Community models.

4. Check Roller Settings—and the Structure Behind Them

Everything I'd read in the service manual said to set rollers using the standard stripe test. In practice, on a 30-year-old press, that method fails if the side frames have settled or a bearing is worn. My rule after years of service calls: compare the stripe at both ends of the roller. If there's more than a 1/16-inch difference, the problem is structural—no amount of roller adjustment will fix it. Replace the bearing, then set the stripes. It sounds obvious, but I've seen entire roller assemblies swapped out when the real culprit was a worn bearing housing.

5. Check Web Tension at the Infeed

When the product comes out with misregister or gearbands, most operators head straight for the printing units. On older Goss models, the cause is frequently in the infeed—specifically the dancer rolls and web tension control. Target tension depends on stock; for 45 GSM newsprint, we aim for around 100 pounds of web tension. Put a tension meter on the web at the infeed before you touch the unit bolts.

6. Verify Lubrication Flow, Not Just Pressure

Centralized lubrication systems fail quietly. A grease line to the folder's main drive bearing can clog, and the bearing runs dry for weeks before seizing. Add this to the weekly checklist: verify flow at the farthest point from the pump. Don't trust the gauge alone. In March 2024, we replaced a folder drive bearing on a Goss Community that had run dry for an estimated three weeks. The part was $8,000; the downtime and missed distribution cost the publisher roughly twice that. Five minutes of checking flow would have caught it.

7. Keep a Maintenance Log (The Boring Step That Works)

The 12-point log we implemented after that 2024 bearing failure has saved us an estimated $35,000 in repeat failures—or at least that's my conservative number. Write down the date, the symptom, and the adjustment. Next time the same problem appears, you have a pattern. Most plants skip this because it's tedious, which is exactly why the plants that do it call us less. Five minutes of documentation beats five days of troubleshooting.

Part 2: Goss Press Relocation

Relocating a Goss press is a different animal. We've handled 40+ moves, and every smooth one followed the same sequence. In 2019, a publisher needed their Community moved in four weeks—normally a six-week job. We had 48 hours to decide whether to take it. Normally I'd insist on a full site survey first; there was no time. We accepted based on a rough floor plan. Turned out the new building had single-phase power where the press needed three-phase. Three days and $6,000 in electrical work later, it was fine. The list below is what we use to avoid the predictable part of that chaos.

8. Photograph, Label, Trace, Measure

Before disconnecting a single air line, photograph every connection and label every cable with two tags—one on each end. Trace the lines end-to-end before trusting the labels, especially if the press has been modified over the years. We once found an air line labeled "pneumatic control" that actually ran to the lubrication system. On a press that ran yesterday, one day of labeling saves a week of reassembly.

9. Mark Alignment Shims Before Dismantling

The shims under side frames and between units are set to tight tolerances. Lose track of which shim goes where, and you'll spend days at the new site realigning units that are 1/32 inch off. We paint-mark every shim and photograph the stack before lifting. That habit has probably saved us three weeks of cumulative re-alignment time across our moves.

10. Protect the Rollers, Not Just the Electrical Cabinet

Every crew wraps the electrical cabinet in plastic. The rollers—precision-ground, sensitive to impact—get left exposed. A single gouge in a roller surface prints a defect in every copy. Use wooden crates, or heavy-duty shrink wrap with cardboard edge protectors. Never lay a roller flat; stand it on end on a clean pallet. Which, honestly, I've seen crews do and regret when a $3,000 roller hit the concrete.

11. Check Floor Flatness Before You Sign Anything

This is the most skipped step in the entire list. The new floor looks level—until the press is bolted down and the web path is off by 3/16 of an inch. We now verify floor flatness at the new site before we quote the move. A Goss press needs a flat, level foundation; if the floor needs grinding or grouting, add two weeks to the schedule. This was accurate as of early 2025—foundation specs vary by model, so confirm with your manual.

12. Level, Bolt, Then Connect Drive Shafts

At the new site, the order is: place the units, level them, bolt them down, then connect the drive shafts. I've seen it done in reverse, which ends with disconnect-and-redo when the shafts don't line up. Align the frames first, using a wire or laser, torque the foundation bolts—then the shafts line up within spec. For most Community presses, coupling alignment tolerance is around .002 inches, but check your manual; earlier models differ.

13. Test Run With the Paper You'll Actually Use

After reassembly, test with the same stock you run in production. Newsprint at 45 GSM behaves differently than 80 GSM text weight. We once saw a reconfigured press run beautifully on test paper, then wrinkle the customer's actual newsprint. The cause was a former board angle that needed a 10-minute adjustment—but it took a full day to diagnose because no one had tested with real stock.

14. Build in a 48-Hour Buffer Before Full Production

This is the hardest point to sell to a publisher who wants production Monday morning. But after 40+ moves, the pattern is clear: moves with a 48-hour buffer before full production saw a fraction of the start-up issues. The ones that went straight into production generated callbacks within a week. If you can't manage 48 hours, run a 12-hour trial at 80% speed. And tell management the math: $5,000 saved in overtime isn't worth $50,000 in rerun costs when a moving-related problem appears mid-production.

Common Mistakes We Still See

Skipping the shim documentation. No matter how often we repeat it, one crew will trust their memory. We made it a rule: no label, no lift.

Trusting the maintenance schedule on paper. The checklist in the plant manager's office often doesn't match what happens in the pressroom. Ask the operator—not the manager—when the folder was last greased. The answers are surprisingly different.

Calling for emergency service before basic checks. A fair share of our "emergency" invoices turn out to be an unplugged sensor or a closed valve. No complaint here—that's the business model (not that we advertise it). But run the 10-minute verification in step 1 first.

One More Thing Before You Start

If you're planning an overhaul on an older Goss, order spare parts before you book the downtime. As of Q1 2025, lead times on some gear and shaft components are running 8-12 weeks. And if you're moving a press, add a parts buffer to the budget—bearings and seals will need replacing during reassembly. That's not a sales pitch; it's the difference between a smooth move and a press sitting in pieces for a month.

This checklist isn't exhaustive—your press model will have its own quirks. But the sequence, and the habit of verifying before assuming, is what carries over. Follow it, and you'll dodge most of the emergencies we get called for. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction. On a newspaper deadline, that's not a slogan; it's the difference between sleeping in your own bed and sleeping in the pressroom.
