I’m the quality and brand compliance manager at a commercial equipment company. I review every deliverable before it reaches customers—roughly 200 unique items a year. In Q1 2024, I rejected 8% of first deliveries for spec mismatches, from press parts with incorrect bore tolerances to documentation that didn’t match the actual serial number. So when a production manager asks whether they should move an existing Goss Community printing press or buy something new, I don’t give a sales pitch. I run a comparison.
The Comparison That Makes or Breaks a Capital Decision
Relocating a Goss Community printing press is a different project from buying a new press. The comparison framework I use has four dimensions: condition, total cost, parts and support, and the smaller equipment decisions that tend to get ignored. The same spec-checking discipline applies at every scale—a 40-ton web offset press and a 3D printer stand both fail for the same reason: someone assumed instead of measured.
Dimension 1: Condition vs. assumptions
Everything I read about press relocation in the trade press says the condition of the machine becomes obvious once you take it apart. In practice, I found the opposite. Machines that look clean on the outside often hide the most expensive surprises.
We inspected a two-unit Goss Community last year (this was back in November 2024) where the operator insisted the press was “running fine until we shut it down.” The bearing journal on one cylinder was 0.004 inch out of round. Normal tolerance in our acceptance criteria is 0.001 inch. That difference doesn’t show up in a photo or a sales listing—you only find it with a micrometer and a patient afternoon.
The same is true for a new press, but the risk shifts. A new machine gives you factory tolerances and a warranty. A relocated machine gives you lower capital cost but depends entirely on the quality of the pre-move inspection and the reassembly crew. I only believed this after watching a relocation fail because someone skipped a foundation check. The press was aligned on paper, but the concrete slab wasn’t flat. It cost a $22,000 redo and delayed the launch by six weeks. If you own a Goss Community, ask for a condition survey before you get emotionally attached to the relocation budget.
Dimension 2: Total cost is not the ticket price
The conventional wisdom is that relocating existing equipment is always cheaper than buying new. My experience with a few dozen projects suggests otherwise—or at least, it suggests “cheaper” needs a tighter definition.
A goss press relocation quote includes rigging, transport, foundations, electrical work, realignment, and often replacement parts. When I reviewed Q3 2024 quotes for a six-unit Community, rigging alone ranged from $35,000 to $60,000 depending on site access. That number doesn’t include a crane rental that can run $800-$1,500 per day in some regions, nor does it include the cost of downtime.
Buying new shifts those costs into the purchase price and adds training. Neither option is universally cheaper. If your current press has documented maintenance records and a stable print demand, relocation preserves capital and can be a very smart small-shop move. I’m not saying that just because I like the underdog—today’s two-unit weekly newspaper operation can be tomorrow’s five-unit commercial shop. Small doesn’t mean unimportant.
Dimension 3: Parts and support after the move
This is where the goss name changes the analysis. Goss Community presses have a long parts tail. As of January 2025, Goss’s published service documentation still lists legacy Community support, and independent suppliers sell parts for older units. If you need a cylinder, gear, or blanket roller after a relocation, there is usually a documented lead time and a real person to call.
With a new press from another manufacturer, you’re buying into a newer parts network. That can be fine, but it should be verified, not assumed. We now ask every vendor for a written parts availability commitment, including lead times and after-market options. A press only earns money when it runs. The comparison between relocation and new equipment should include the answer to one question: “If this part breaks on a Friday night, who answers the phone?”
Dimension 4: Smaller print purchases use the same logic
While a company is wrestling with a press decision, smaller equipment decisions often get less scrutiny. I review those too, and the same comparison framework applies. A few examples keep coming up.
First, a DIY 3D printer stand. I’ve tested stands made from plywood, particle board, and, unbelievably, stacked file folders (surprise, surprise: folders are not a tolerance device). A DIY stand can work if the top surface is flat and the frame is rigid. The key is vibration. A $30 stand built from 3/4-inch plywood with cross-bracing can outperform a $120 commercial stand with wobbly legs. The conventional wisdom says purpose-built is always better. My experience with 3D printers in a single-story building says stiffness matters more than the price tag. But don’t quote me on exact prices—those were street prices in late 2024.
Second, a wireless laser printer. It’s tempting to think Wi-Fi is Wi-Fi. Then a user tries to print a 50-page proof on a congested network and blames the printer. A wireless laser printer is convenient, but a wired-only model with an Ethernet port is often more reliable for production work. If you compare the total cost, including the support calls and the time a wireless setup eats, the wired option can quietly win. As of January 2025, basic black-and-white wireless laser printers listed at $180-$350 at major office suppliers; color models start closer to $300. Verify current prices before assuming “wireless” is worth the premium.
Third, the question I hear more than any other printer-related question: is a Deskjet printer the same as an inkjet printer? The answer is yes—Deskjet is a product family name for inkjet printers made by HP. It is not a separate printing technology. LaserJet is the different process. So yes, a Deskjet is an inkjet, though not every inkjet is a Deskjet. The more useful question is whether you need inkjet or laser for your workload. For color-heavy proofing and marketing collateral, inkjet often makes sense. For black-and-white forms, shipping labels, and correspondence, a laser printer usually has lower cost per page.
So Which Should You Choose?
I don’t believe in giving a universal “relocate” or “buy new” answer. The decision depends on your building, your crew, and how much documentation you can find for the press.
If you have a Goss Community printing press with service logs and no signs of major crash damage, relocation is a credible option. Get a condition survey, get a fixed-price rigging quote, and ask for a parts availability statement in writing. If the numbers line up, you can preserve a valuable machine and avoid the debt of new equipment.
If your current press is a collection of mismatched units with missing records, and your maintenance team is retiring, buying new may be the lower-risk path. Same goes for a press that has been sitting outside or under a leaking roof for years. The attraction of a low purchase price disappears the first time a bearing fails.
And if you’re making the decision as a small operation, don’t let anyone make you feel like your two-unit Community reconfiguration is too small to matter. In my experience, the vendors who take a small project seriously are the vendors who earn the larger parts order later. I only learned that lesson after accepting a minor specification deviation on a small order because I didn’t want to cause friction. That “minor” deviation caused a $22,000 reprint. Now I treat every specification as if it were the last one before launch.
Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential.
