Goss Printing Press Company or Digital? A Deadline-Driven Guide to Choosing Printing Tech

One question I get more than almost any other: "Should I keep my Goss press or move to digital?" My honest answer? It depends. Basically, there's no universal right answer.

I've spent 12 years as a production manager at a commercial printing company, and I've handled 200+ rush orders. Maybe 180, I'd have to check our job logs. But the pattern is clear: the best technology depends on the job, the deadline, and the total cost.

When I'm triaging a rush order, I don't ask 'offset or digital?' I ask: "What's the fastest reliable way to get this exact job out the door?" That question changes the answer.

Here are four scenarios and my honest recommendations.

Scenario A: You Own a Goss Urbanite and Need Long Runs

When people ask about the Goss printing press company, they're usually asking about the engineers who built the Urbanite, Community, and Suburban presses. Those machines were designed for speed and reliability on newspaper-style work. The Goss Urbanite press in our plant is a 1980s double-width with a folder. It's not pretty. It's not the newest offset press your competitor can brag about. But it has earned its floor space.

In March 2024, 36 hours before a product launch, a client found a typo in a 12,000-piece brochure. We reprinted the corrected version on the Goss press overnight and delivered at 7 a.m. The alternative, a digital press with a lower click charge, would have taken longer because of the run time and finishing steps. The Goss got it done.

My advice: If you already have a Goss Urbanite and a trained crew, don't retire it just because digital is newer. For runs above 5,000 to 10,000 impressions, web offset can be cheaper and faster per unit than toner or inkjet. A clean reconfiguration—adding a folder, changing the web width, updating the inking system—can keep a 30-year-old press competitive.

That advice is context-dependent. It works because we operate six days a week and have a full-time operator. If you're a small shop with no offset crew, the calculus changes. Keep the machine only if you can feed it enough work and maintain it properly.

Scenario B: You're Doing Short Runs, Variable Data, or DTF Transfers

Digital wins here, no question. If your jobs are under 1,000 copies, personalized, or printed on film for garment transfers, an offset press is overkill. But the pattern is consistent: setup is faster, waste is lower, and short-run unit costs are better than offset.

The 'offset always wins for quality' thinking comes from an era before digital press technology matured. That's changed. Modern production inkjet can match offset for many commercial jobs, except the long-run per-unit costs.

For standard products—business cards, flyers, brochures—online printers like 48 Hour Print work well. According to 48 Hour Print's service guidelines (48hourprint.com), they handle quantities from 25 to 25,000+, standard 3-7 business day turnaround, and rush orders as fast as same-day depending on the product. If you need 500 postcards, an online printer is often cheaper than running a Goss press or even a production inkjet in-house.

But consider alternatives when you need custom die-cut shapes, quantities under 25, same-day in-hand delivery, or hands-on color matching with physical proofs. No online printer can replace a local shop for those.

One more thing: if you're going to use a DTF printer, test your film and adhesive before you sell a 48-hour turnaround. I almost ordered a generic stack of coated film once. That would've cost us an $800 rush fee and a very angry client.

Scenario C: Inkjet Printer vs LaserJet in the Office

The "inkjet printer vs laserjet" question still comes up, but it's not a production-printing decision. If you're choosing one for a front office, compare total cost per page, monthly duty cycle, and how often you're willing to replace cartridges or toner. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining that to a customer than deal with a mismatched purchase later.

The counterintuitive part: I'd usually pick a laser for offices that print more than a few hundred pages a month. But for a small team that prints in bursts, a good inkjet with XL cartridges can be cheaper and just as fast. The hidden cost is printhead cleaning. If the machine sits idle for two weeks, an inkjet can clog. A laser doesn't have that problem.

Scenario D: A 3D Printer Giveaway (or Any 'Free' Hardware)

Here's a scenario that sounds like a procurement trick but is really psychology: the 3d printer giveaway. A vendor offers a free 3D printer with a lease, or a trade show raffle catches your eye. Free hardware is never free. You pay for consumables, maintenance, training, and the operator's time.

In 2023, a nearby trade shop accepted a "free" DTF starter kit and then spent three months fighting film and adhesive curves that were never clearly specified. The giveaway isn't the problem. The problem is making a purchase decision based on the giveaway instead of the actual need. If you want a 3D printer for prototyping, buy the one that matches your real requirement. If you're equipping a print lab, treat it like any other capital investment: total cost, support, and reliability.

Which Scenario Are You Actually In?

Here's the short version. When I'm triaging a rush order, I don't ask 'offset or digital?' I ask: "What's the fastest reliable way to get this exact job out the door?" Based on our internal data from 200+ rush jobs, that answer changes with the job.

Ask yourself four questions:

  1. What's the quantity? Under 1,000? Digital. Over 10,000? A maintained Goss press can beat a digital press on cost and time.
  2. What's the deadline? Same-day in-hand? Online printers and freight won't cut it; use local or in-house. 24-48 hours? A web offset press can be the fastest option if the run is long enough.
  3. What's the substrate? Newsprint, coated paper, film, transfer paper? Your press configuration has to match the material.
  4. What's the total cost? The total cost of ownership includes base price, setup fees, shipping, rush fees, and potential reprint costs. The lowest quoted price often isn't the lowest total cost.

A useful pricing check from our records: In Q3 2024, we priced 2,000 4-color flyers with four different online and local vendors. Same specifications. Quotes ranged from $212 to $350, and rush fees from $89 to $155. That's why I say total cost, not list price.

So glad I paid for a test run on our DTF setup before promising a client a 48-hour garment order. It was one click away from a wasted $800 order. That's why the first rule of emergency printing is: know your machine's real speed and real limits before the deadline starts.

One caution about my advice: my experience is based on about 200 rush jobs with newspaper and catalog clients, mostly domestic. If you're dealing with international logistics or unusual packaging, there are factors I'm not aware of.
