If you're planning a Goss press relocation, start with a layout drawing—not a crane quote
We moved an eight-unit Goss Community press in March 2024. The physical move took about 20 hours. The planning took close to 90 hours—actually, 90 is my best estimate, because I didn't log every phone call. If you're planning a Goss press relocation, stop pricing cranes and start drawing the floor plan.

Two myths about moving a Goss Community press
Myth: If it ran before the move, it will run after. The move is when latent wear shows up. A bearing that seemed fine will fail once you unseat it and re-seat it. We found a cracked differential housing that had never leaked until the unit was lifted.
Myth: The move is expensive because of the crane. The crane was maybe 12 percent of the total cost. The real cost was downtime. We planned for six days of downtime and used nine. That extra three days cost more than any single equipment line item.
People assume a press relocation is like moving a machine from one warehouse to another. It isn't. You're removing a precision system that was aligned in three dimensions, then pretending the new floor is level enough to let it settle. That's why the layout and leveling plan matter more than the physical lift.
When a Goss press relocation is the wrong call
I'm not going to tell you that moving a Goss Community press is always worth it. If your press is old, has no recent parts history, and you don't have a service contract, the relocation cost can exceed the value of the press. Our 1986 Community press made sense to move because we had already invested in a rebuilt folder and a new drive. If you haven't made that investment, think carefully.
This worked for us because we had the original operator manuals, a millwright who knew Goss equipment, and a production schedule with room for delays. If you have none of those—or if the press has been sitting for more than a year—spend the money on an independent inspection before you spend it on rigging.
