If you run a Goss printing press—especially a Goss urbanite press or another web offset model—you know the exact feeling of a bad press day. The folder starts skipping. Color drifts between signatures. An operator walks over with a grease-stained rag and says, “I think we need to stop the press.”
That’s when the calculations start. Missed delivery. Overtime. Angry advertisers. And then the possibility that the machine has finally reached the end of its useful life.
I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at a commercial printing equipment manufacturer. I review roughly 200 unique press components every year, reject parts that don’t match engineering drawings, and occasionally make vendors very unhappy. The Deeper Cause: Off-Spec Parts and Second-Class Support
Most small press owners buy a replacement part without a spec sheet in hand. They match a photo and a part number and assume the supplier did the engineering homework. Some suppliers do. Some don't.

A large account can handle that kind of issue. It has engineers to check incoming parts and push back. A small shop doesn’t have that leverage. It buys one off-spec roller. Think about a thermal receipt printer. It's simple. But put plain copy paper in one—paper without the color-forming coating—and the receipt fades. You don't replace the printer. You fix the paper supply.
Now imagine a supplier telling you, “copy paper is basically the same.” You'd laugh. But that logic still gets applied to press parts. Roller durometer, surface finish, bearing clearance, blanket thickness—these numbers exist because the machine system depends on them.
From Canvas Prints to Continuous Ink Printers: It’s a System
People sometimes ask, can you print on canvas with an inkjet printer? Yes, but not with any canvas and any ink. You need the right coating, color profile, ink set, and media handling. Otherwise the print looks muddy.
The same is true for a Canon continuous ink printer in a packaging line. It relies on nozzle health, consistent ink viscosity, and substrate compatibility. Different technologies, same principle: quality is a system outcome.
So why does that system thinking disappear when we step up to a 70-ton press? It shouldn't. Every part on a print system matters because every part interacts with the next one.
The Small-Account Penalty
But I don't blame buyers alone. The supply side also creates the problem by treating smaller accounts as lower priority. I've seen a one-press shop's phone call go unanswered for days, while a metro plant gets same-day service. That's the small-account penalty.

Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential. I'd rather work with a printer who asks hard questions than one who apologizes for taking up my time.
The Real Cost of Ignoring This
Off-spec parts don't usually fail dramatically. They fail slowly, creating more make-ready, more waste, more overtime. The losses compound quietly.
I remember a small printer who went back and forth on a roller purchase for two days. The original-spec set cost about twice as much as the aftermarket set. His budget was tight and the deadline wasn't moving. He bought the aftermarket set because, financially, it was the only decision he could make. Three months later, the press had a gear train problem. Repair estimate: $14,000. The amount he initially saved: $1,400.
That's the kind of math I keep seeing. You don't notice it in one purchase. You notice it in a year-end review that shows no profit and a press that's still unreliable.
Quality is also measurable. Pantone's color matching guidelines put a delta E of 2 as the typical limit for critical brand colors. Newsprint image resolution is often specced around 170–200 dpi at final size. If the press mechanics are drifting because of wrong parts, you can't hold those numbers.
I've seen an 8,000-insert job rejected because the back cover color was outside tolerance. Reprint overnight: $22,000. Root cause: a non-standard blanket plus an operator adjusting ink to fix the symptom. Not a worn-out press.
What to Do Instead (and Keep It Simple)
I'm not about to tell you that you should never buy a new press. Some operations genuinely need more capacity or a different configuration. But the smartest move is to get a clear-eyed inspection before making that call.
- Have the whole press inspected—not just the symptom. Look for misapplied parts, unmatched part numbers, or unmarked consumables.
- Demand spec sheets. If a supplier can't provide a tolerance and traceable part number, treat it as a red flag.

- Choose service partners that answer small requests too. If a vendor can't take you seriously at $200, it won't suddenly become reliable at $20,000.
