The bottom line

Goss press repairs will never be cheap. But they can be predictable. And predictable costs are something a procurement manager can actually manage. The difference comes down to how you evaluate the purchase: total cost, not ticket price.

That's the framework I use, and it's why I've stopped being surprised by repair bills. I don't rely on the initial quote alone anymore. I dig into the charges, the experience, the parts, and the potential downtime. And I make decisions that my CFO will still be comfortable with six months later, not just the day the invoice arrives.

I've made my share of mistakes in this area — the $300 "savings" that turned into a $9,000 loss still stings. But that's exactly why I keep a spreadsheet, keep a checklist, and keep reminding myself that the real cost of a repair is a lot bigger than the number on the quote.
