The $18,000 Lesson: Why Skipping Press Specification Verification Cost Us a Launch (and a Client)

It was a Tuesday morning in Q1 2024. I was reviewing the final documentation for a Goss press reconfiguration project we’d been planning for four months. The client, a mid-sized newspaper publisher, had ordered a full overhaul of their Goss printing press—new folder, updated inking units, the works. The budget was significant. The timeline was tight. I rejected the batch. The vendor wasn’t happy. They argued it was ‘within industry standard.’ But industry standard for what? A storage shed?

The client would see a press that was physically awkward, hard to work on. They’d associate that with our brand. And then they’d start looking at other options.

The Turnaround: Implementing a Verification Protocol

So I did what I should have done after the first time: I created a formal specification verification checklist. It wasn’t complicated. It had 47 items, grouped by system: Structural, Electrical, Mechanical, Service Access, Safety. Every item required a pass/fail based on a documented standard—either from the original Goss press manual, our internal reconfiguration guide, or an industry reference.

For the client, it meant a two-week delay while the vendor reworked the folder’s frame to accommodate the extra clearance. That cost everyone time and money. I remember hitting ‘confirm’ on the change order and immediately thinking: did I make the right call? What if the vendor was right and I was being overly cautious?

The two weeks until the revised drawings arrived were stressful. I worried we’d looked like the bottleneck. But when the new specs came back—with the 42-inch clearance—I knew it was the right move. That quality issue could have cost us a $22,000 redo and delayed our launch. Instead, it cost us some sleep and a deeper relationship with the client. Because we caught it early, we actually built trust. The production manager later told me: ‘You were the one who stopped the train before it derailed.’

Dodged a bullet. But I was one click away from approving a doomed design.

The Lesson: Quality Isn’t About the Product. It’s About the Brand.

The question isn’t whether you can get away with a 6-inch gap. It’s what that gap says about your company. If you ship a press that’s impossible to service, your client remembers. They remember the frustration. They remember the wasted time. And they remember you—not in a good way.

Since then, every contract for a Goss press reconfiguration or press relocation includes a specification verification clause. It adds about 5% to the planning time. It’s worth every minute. The cost increase for measurably better perception? On a $500,000 project, it’s negligible. The cost of a bad reputation? Incalculable.

So glad I caught it. Almost didn’t.
