How to Keep Your Goss Community Printing Press Running: A 5-Step Maintenance Checklist (From Someone Who Learned the Hard Way)

If you're running a Goss Community printing press (or any older web offset workhorse), you already know these machines are built like tanks – but they still need consistent care. I've been maintaining Goss presses since 2017, and honestly, my first few years were a disaster. I made every mistake you can imagine: skipped daily checks, trusted auto-lube indicators, mounted plates in a rush. Total cost of my learning curve? Roughly $14,000 in repairs and downtime. Basically, I wrote this checklist so you don't have to repeat my screw-ups.

This applies to any Goss press operator, maintenance tech, or production manager who wants to cut unplanned stoppages. There are five steps – follow them in order, and you'll catch 90% of the issues before they become emergencies.

Step 1: Daily Visual Inspection – the One Most People Skip

I know it sounds basic. But the most frustrating part of my early years was how many problems I could have spotted with a two-minute walkaround. You'd think a quick glance at the cylinders, rollers, and oil lines would be obvious – but production pressure makes you lazy. I once ran a three-hour shift with a cracked ink fountain blade because I didn't look before startup. $1,200 in wasted ink and plates.

Here’s what you actually need to check every morning (or before each shift):

  • Oil sight glasses – are they at the right level? Note: on Goss Community presses, the right side sight glass often gets clogged. Tap it gently.
  • Blanket condition – any nicks, bulges, or glazing? Run your finger across (careful – edges). A $200 blanket can cause a $2,000 reprint.
  • Ink roller contact stripes – are they even width across the train? Uneven stripes mean bearing or pressure issues.
  • Air filter on the dryer – clogged filters cost drying efficiency and wasted energy. Swap if it’s dirty (every 30 days, but check visually).

(Note to self: I still occasionally skip this when I'm running late. Bad habit. As of early 2025, I've started setting a phone alarm for 7:50 AM – literally “walkaround”.)

Step 2: Lubrication Schedule – Don’t Trust the Automatic System

Goss presses have an automatic grease system, but I learned the hard way that it’s not foolproof. In September 2022, I had a bearing failure on the folder section because a grease line had a pinhole leak – the auto-lube was pumping grease onto the floor, not into the bearing. That mistake cost a full day of production and a $3,200 repair bill.

My rule now: manual verification every 2 weeks. Not just reading the reservoir level. Actually open the inspection panels and feel the grease nipples. You’re looking for:

  • Any line that feels cooler than others (blockage?)
  • Excess grease around seals (over-lubrication is also bad, it washes out seals)
  • Unusual vibration or heat on bearings – a quick IR thermometer check takes 30 seconds. Honestly, a no-brainer once you get in the habit.

The preventive mindset shift: 10 minutes of greasing inspection every two weeks beats a day of tear-down. When I compared our Q3 downtime logs before and after I started this practice, we dropped bearing-related stops by 70%.

Step 3: Blanket and Roller Pressure Check – the “Feel” Test

Most operators adjust pressure based on printed results – a dot gain issue, a ghosting pattern. That's reactive. By the time you see the problem, the blanket or roller may already be damaged. The game-changer for me was learning to check pressure mechanically, not visually.

Here's the simple method (no fancy tools required):

  1. Clean the rollers with solvent (use the right kind for your ink).
  2. Lock the press in manual rotation.
  3. Place a strip of thin plastic (0.003″ feeler gauge works) between two rollers at one end, then the other. The drag should feel equal on both sides. If one side pulls harder, you have uneven pressure.
  4. Adjust the eccentric bushing in small increments – 1/8 turn at a time. Don’t overtighten.

This sounds finicky, but it takes about 7 minutes per unit. I can’t count how many times I’ve fixed register issues on the Goss Community by just rebalancing the roller pressures – without touching the plate. (circa February 2023, I wasted 3 hours remounting plates when the real culprit was a loose roller bushing. Mental note: check pressures first.)

Step 4: Plate Mounting Verification – the 10-Second Safety Net

Plate misalignment is the #1 cause of misregister in our shop. And the worst part? It's almost always a mounting error, not a press adjustment problem. After the third rejection in Q1 2024 (a $3,200 reprint for a catalog job), I created a pre-mount checklist that we now pin to every plate punch.

Before you lock the plate on the cylinder, confirm these three things:

  • Bend accuracy – the plate's leading edge bend must be parallel to the cylinder slot. Hold the plate up to the light; if the bend line wobbles, scrap it.
  • Hole alignment – pin holes line up with the register pins? On Goss Community presses, some plates have a tolerance of ±0.1 mm. A half-millimeter error makes a visible difference.
  • Gap position – the plate gap sits exactly at the cylinder gap? If you're off by 1/8″, the plate will bulge at the edges.

I added a red flag: if any of these fail, stop. Don’t try to “force” the plate on. That mistake in early 2024 resulted in a torn plate and a 45-minute cleanup.

Now, our team catches about 2–3 bad plates every month before they go on press. Call it a $500–$1,000 savings each time.

Step 5: Emergency Shutdown Protocol – Limit the Damage When Things Go Wrong

Even with all the prevention, things still break. The difference between a 15-minute fix and a 3-hour nightmare often comes down to how fast you stop the press. I learned this during a static spark incident in December 2024 – I hesitated to hit the e-stop because I thought it would cause a paper jam. It didn’t. But in those 5 seconds of hesitation, a fire started in the dryer.

So here’s my emergency checklist – memorize it:

  • Smoke or fire – hit the master e-stop immediately. Do not try to clear the jam first. (We now have a sign above the console: “STOP FIRST – THINK SECOND”.)
  • Suddenly loud noise (grinding, squeal) – stop, turn off main power, and listen for the source. Running another second can crack a gear.
  • Web break with wrapper – stop, but don’t grab the paper barehanded. Use a hook or wait for the press to coast. I’ve seen two hand injuries from people yanking at a wrapped web.

Bottom line: having a clear, drilled shutdown sequence saves your equipment, your team, and your budget. It's pretty cheap insurance.

Common Mistakes I Still See (and How to Avoid Them)

Even with a checklist, people take shortcuts. Here are the three I see most often:

  • Skipping Step 1 – “I’ll do the walkaround after coffee.” By then, you’ve already printed 500 copies with a dry roller. (I really should put a clock on the wall near the ink temperature gauge.)
  • Over-relying on auto-lube – the system can fail silently. Check manually.
  • Using generic parts – I’ve seen operators install aftermarket blankets that claim to fit Goss. About 30% of the time they delaminate after 20,000 impressions. Stick to OEM or verified equivalents. It's not worth the savings.

One more thing: if you're also curious about how the inkjet printer works for smaller label runs – say, a vial label printer – the maintenance principles differ a lot. Inkjet uses nozzles that clog if you don't keep them clean. But for high-volume newspaper production, the Goss Community offset press is still the king. (And no, the Selphy printer photo machines don't apply here – those are thermal dye transfer, completely different beast.)
