First, Triage the Job
There isn’t one right machine for every rush order. The right answer depends on what you’re producing, how many units you need, and what it’s worth to miss the deadline. More often than not, the fix isn’t a faster press. It’s matching the tool to the job.
People think a rush order costs more because it’s harder. In my experience, it costs more because it’s unpredictable and it disrupts planned work. That’s also how you should choose equipment: you want the least disruptive option, not the fastest-sounding one.
In my role coordinating press service and reconfiguration requests at Goss, I’ve handled 200+ rush orders over 12 years, including same-day part turnarounds for community weeklies and commercial printers. When someone calls with a hard date, I run through three scenarios:
- Scenario A: high-volume printed pieces → a Goss press is usually the answer.
- Scenario B: wires and cables that need clear, permanent identification → use an electrical wire label printer.
- Scenario C: a broken part with no spare in stock → a Prusa 3D printer can save you, and you need to know how to cold pull the nozzle.
Scenario A: You Need 5,000 Printed Pieces by Friday
If the output is a folded, paginated product and the quantity is in thousands, you’re in press territory. Goss printing press history matters here because almost every pressroom has one of these machines still running.
Why the Goss Community printing press still wins under pressure
The company started in Chicago in the late 1800s and built its name on newspaper presses. The Goss Community, introduced in the 1960s, became the default press for small dailies and weeklies. I want to say the first one went into a paper in the Midwest, but don’t quote me on the exact year. What I can tell you from the shop floor is that hundreds of Community units are still in production.
That’s not because they never fail. It’s because the architecture was designed to be reconfigured. You can replace units, add a folder, change the web path, and upgrade the controls. A 40-year-old Community with modern drives can be more reliable than a brand-new press you have nobody trained to run.
This was true years ago when presses were simpler, and it’s still true today. The “old press equals obsolete” thinking doesn’t match reality. If the press is maintained and the parts are available, the risk is often lower than installing a machine from scratch. In March 2024, a weekly paper called on a Thursday afternoon—maybe 3:30, I’d have to check the log—needing a quarterfold part before a Saturday production run. Normal parts lead time was six days. We located a rebuilt unit, put it on a truck, and got the part to their plant by Friday morning. The alternative was a missed edition and a penalty clause with their commercial insert customer.
Before you blame the press, check the downstream deadline too. According to USPS (usps.com), First-Class Mail letter postage was $0.73 for a 1-oz letter as of January 2025. If your run needs to hit a postal rate change or a mail house cutoff, the press is only one link in a longer chain. In a deadline, the machine that’s already in your building is more valuable than the one that sounds better in a brochure.
Scenario B: You Have 400 Cables and Confusion
Press installations and relocations are where deadlines go to die. I’ve seen wiring harnesses get disconnected carefully, labeled with masking tape, and then lose the labels during transport. That’s why a dedicated electrical wire label printer is not a nice-to-have. It’s the difference between a weekend reconnect and a four-day headache.
An electrical wire label printer uses self-laminating vinyl, heat-shrink tubes, and flag tags that stay readable around oil, heat, and panel vibration. A standard office label maker won’t survive that. Office label tape peels, curls, and ends up inside a junction box. If you’re doing a press reconfiguration, get a labeler that handles wire sizes as small as 28 AWG and prints heat-shrink sleeve stock.
A quick lesson I learned the hard way: we didn’t have a formal labeling process for the first relocation I helped coordinate. The third time we had to trace an unlabeled wire, I made a checklist and bought a proper labeler. It saved us maybe two days on the next move.
This is also where I’ll point you to someone else. We’re press people, not label-printing specialists. I’m not going to pretend we make the best electrical wire label printer. What I know is the application: buy a purpose-built unit from a supplier who lives in cable identification, and use it before you disconnect a single wire.
Scenario C: You Need a Part That Doesn’t Exist
Old presses have spacers, bushings, cams, and toggles that you can’t get overnight. Sometimes you don’t need an actual replacement part—you need a prototype or a jig to keep a machine running until the real part arrives. That’s where a Prusa 3D printer earns its rack space.
If you’ve searched for a “pursa 3d printer,” you mean Prusa. I use Prusa i3-style machines in our lab for test spacers, alignment guides, and dust caps. They’re not production components, but they can turn a two-week lead time into an overnight fix. For a $300-ish tool, that pays off fast.
How to cold pull a 3D printer
When a nozzle jams, most people tear the hotend apart. Before you do that, do a cold pull. It’s faster and usually fixes the clog.
- Heat the hotend to your normal printing temperature. Around 215°C for PLA.
- Push cleaning filament or a piece of Nylon filament through until it exits the nozzle.
- Let the hotend cool to about 100°C. Not too hot, not too cold.
- Pull the filament out with a steady, firm force. The tip should come out shaped like the inside of the nozzle, with contamination embedded in it.
- Repeat until the tip comes out clean. Then cut the filament end clean before the next print.
Do this as routine maintenance, not just when the printer jams. A 5-minute cold pull can save a 12-hour print job that would otherwise fail at hour 11.
How to Tell Which Scenario You’re In
Still not sure? Ask three questions.
- What’s the final output? Folded printed paper, a labeled cable, or a plastic part.
- How many units do you need? Thousands means a press. Dozens means a label printer. One-off means a 3D printer.
- What’s the cost of failure? If a missed run costs a client relationship, favor the most reliable option, not the newest.
If your output is paper at high speed, talk to a press parts and service specialist. If it’s identification, find a labeling product specialist. If it’s a physical part with no source, find a 3D printer and learn how to cold pull it.
This might sound strange from a company that makes press parts. But a specialist who knows their own limits is worth more than a generalist who will try anything. I’d rather send you to a label or filament expert than pretend we’re the answer to every printing question. That’s what “professional” means to me: know what you’re good at, and say so when it matters.
