This comparison shows up in budget meetings more than you'd think. A weekly paper sees a local market for custom apparel, and a Mimaki DTF printer is a proven way into that market. It's a fair question, not a crazy one.
But it's not really either/or. A DTF printer puts transfers on film for garments. A Goss press puts ink on newsprint at thousands of impressions per hour. These are different products solving different problems. If your print volume is shrinking and your team keeps hearing requests for branded merchandise, a DTF line might pay for itself quickly. What I haven't seen is a DTF printer make an aging web press's maintenance issues go away.
The two purchases also have different time horizons. A DTF line is modular, relatively easy to learn, and can be running in weeks. A press reconfiguration is a capital project with a longer payoff. You can do both, and the shops that manage it best treat DTF as a new service line, not a replacement for what the press already does.
7. How fast can we get a Goss press reconfiguration when the deadline is hard?
As fast as the scope allows, and never faster than safety permits. That's not a slogan; it's risk control. The timeline depends on parts availability, electrical work, building access, and how much test time we can protect before your first live run.
A small reconfiguration, like adding a half-deck or repositioning one unit, can happen over an extended weekend if all parts are staged in advance. A full line move or a folder replacement is usually measured in weeks. Last year we completed a four-unit Community line in 11 days—or maybe 12, I'd need to check the project file—because a publisher had committed to a launch date.
