Goss Community Press: The 6-Step Inspection Checklist That Comes From Real Mistakes

Looking at a used Goss Community press for your shop? This checklist is for you. Here's what to do: ask the seller to run the press at its rated speed. Then examine the folded product. Are the folds sharp and consistent? Is the pagination correct? Do the perforations tear cleanly? A folder problem affects every single copy that comes off the press—not just one unit's worth.

Why does this step get skipped? Because it's awkward to ask. You don't want to sound like you don't trust the seller. My personal rule now: if the seller isn't willing to run the press at speed, that in itself is information. It took a $9,000 repair bill in September 2022 to teach me that. The seller said "the folder just needs timing," and I let myself believe it. It needed a new cam, a rebuilt chopper, and two weeks of a technician's schedule.

Step 3: Inspect Bearings and Gears—Not the Paint

A freshly painted press is not a well-maintained press. Those two things have no relationship whatsoever, except that someone paid for paint.

Look at the gear trains from multiple angles. You're checking for uneven wear patterns and side thrust marks. Check bearing play on cylinder journals and roller ends. If you know what you're looking for, this takes twenty minutes. If you don't, bring someone who does. A half-day press inspection from a qualified technician runs $300–500 in the U.S. market as of early 2025. That's a rounding error compared to discovering your "bargain" press needs major mechanical work after installation.

The classic mistake: I once bought a press with a fresh coat of paint and told myself it meant the seller cared. It turned out the paint was hiding cracked castings on the side frames. I found that out on installation day, while unbolting the unit. That decision cost 18 days of downtime and most of my patience.

Checkpoint: You've inspected the gear trains and bearings, ideally with a technician who can tell you whether the wear is normal or terminal.

Step 4: Verify Parts Availability Before You Negotiate Price

Call a press parts supplier that specializes in Goss equipment. Ask three questions: Are the major wear parts available for this model? What are the lead times? Which parts are no longer manufactured? The answers tell you whether you're buying a supportable asset or a vintage liability.

From what I've seen as of Q4 2024, the aftermarket support situation for the Community press is genuinely solid—lead times for most wear items run from 3 days to about 4 weeks. That's the good news. The bad news: that's not true for every component, and the list of discontinued parts gets longer every year. The parts that are hard to find are hard for a reason, and they're usually the ones you need most.

Step 5: Bring Your Own Paper and Ink for the Test Run

There's an obvious flaw with seller-run test runs: they use their own supplies. That's convenient. It's also untrustworthy.

Their paper might be more forgiving than yours. Their ink might suit the roller train better. All of that flatters the press without telling you anything about how it will run in your operation.

Bring your own consumables. Run a few thousand impressions. Then check the waste rate—that's the metric that tells the truth. A machine that wastes 3–4% on a controlled test run will eat your margins alive on short commercial runs with frequent changeovers.

The question isn't "does it print?" The question is: "Does it print well with my paper, my ink, at my speeds?" Everything else is just a tour.

Step 6: Contract the Rigging Before You Buy the Press

"Estimate" was my word. "We'll do our best" was what they heard. Those two interpretations were about $6,000 apart, and I paid the difference.

A four-unit Community with folder and sheeter can weigh 20,000 pounds or more depending on configuration. That's not a weekend forklift job—it's a professional millwright operation. Quotes I received between 2022 and 2024 for disassembly, transport, and reassembly ranged from roughly $10,000 to $30,000 depending on distance and site access. Get at least two written quotes. Add a 15–20% buffer for surprises like narrow doorways, floor loading limits, and electrical work.

I've also watched someone save on a "local" rigger and then watch their press get scratched by people not insured for heavy machinery. There's a difference between a rigging company and a guy with a truck. Learn it before your machine learns it.

The Mistakes That Built This List

  • The verbal rigging quote (Step 6). Got a "rough idea" instead of a contract, and the final invoice made the rough idea look optimistic.

Every one of those was avoidable. That's what makes checklists worth writing.

What About Small Operations?

Before I finish, something that matters to me: if you're buying a Community press because you run a small community newspaper or a regional commercial print shop, don't let anyone make you feel like your business matters less than the big dailies.

When I was starting out, I had parts suppliers who treated my small orders like a nuisance. One vendor made me wait two weeks for a $600 order while their big-account orders got turned around in days. Fine—that taught me who my future suppliers would not be.
